چکیده

In the course of studies on the ageing process in the human erythrocyte, we have investigated the metabolic behavior of the cholesterol of the erythrocyte. This study was designed to determine whether the cholesterol of the human erythrocyte is in the dynamic state (2), or whether the cholesterol is incorporated into the newly formed erythrocyte and remains with the cell throughout the cell's life span, as does hemoglobin (3-6). A previous study (7) has shown that the cholesterol of the plasma is in the dynamic state. The rate of entry of cholesterol into the plasma of the circulating blood was measured by determining the rate at which deuterium is incorporated into the cholesterol of the plasma when an elevated concentration of deuterium in the body water is maintained at a steady level by repeated administration of deuterium oxide. In the studies described in this report, the same technique has been employed and the concentrations of deuterium in the cholesterol of the erythrocytes and of the plasma have been compared. Since the cholesterol of the plasma is in the dynamic state, the finding of a similar rate of turnover and a similar pattern of concentrations of deuterium in the cholesterol of the erythrocytes would favor the conclusion that the cholesterol of the erythrocytes is also in the dynamic state. The subjects of this study were a patient with the nephrotic syndrome and a patient with xanthomatosis tuberosum multiplex. A discussion of the mechanisms involved in the maintenance of hypercholesterolemia in these conditions is beyond

Morphological and Morphometric Variations of Erythrocyte in Clarias Gariepinus, Bufo Bufo and Agama Agama Using Some Histological Stains

Introduction: Erythrocytes are highly specialized and the most abundant cell type in vertebrates’ blood. Their main function is the transportation of oxygen to tissues of the body via hemoglobin. Methods: The study was aimed at evaluating erythrocyte morphology in Clarias gariepinus (Cg), Bufo bufo (Bb), and Agama agama (Aa) using different stains; Also, morphometric analysis of erythrocyte w...

VARIATIONS OF GLUCOSE 6-PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE ACTIVITY IN VARIOUS TISSUES INDUCED BY METABOLIC ALKALOSIS, ACIDOSIS AND DIABETES

The effects of chronic metabolic acidosis, alkalosis and alloxan-induced ketoacidosis on G6PD activity of rat kidney, liver and erythrocytes were studied. Metabolic acidosis significantly increased the activity of kidney enzyme (55%) but decreased the liver (43%) and erythrocyte (38%) enzyme activities. Alkalosis did not make a significant change in the kidney or liver enzyme activity but ...

Studies of Human HbAA Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility Index of Non-Malarious Blood in the Presence of Five Anti-malarial Drugs

Background: The capacity of human HbAA erythrocytes of non-malarious blood to withstand osmotic stress in the presence of five antimalarial drugs, Chloroquine phosphate, Quinine, FansidarTM, CoartemTM and HalfanTM was studied in vitro. Materials and Methods: Aqueous solutions of four increasing concentrations of the drugs used in this investigation were in the order: 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6% and 0.8% (...

Human Erythrocyte Superoxide Dismutase Encapsulated in Positively Charged Liposomes

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an important antioxidant that protects many types of cells from the free radical damage. One of the possible ways for the use of SOD is its incorporation in liposomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cationic phospholipids on the entrapment of human erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD) in liposomes. Also, in the present study, w...
